How To Fix Leaks In Air Conditioning Air duct leaks cause temperature issues. The more leakage there is, the more time it takes to meet the temperature requirement. If you have access to the air duct then you can fix the leakage yourself with some simple process:
Flexible ducts can get unfastened or ripped over the years but it’s possible for you to fix them yourself. Just turn the thermostat fan switch on (rather than auto). Feel around the connections and joints for leaks or loose connections.
LOOSE FLEX CONNECTIONS:
If some connection has fallen off entirely then remove the old Panduit strip (a plastic zip that holds it the flex place). There might be one on the outer layer as well, remove that too. Pull the outer layer and the insulation back, unearthing 8-12 inches of inner layer. Fit the inner layer into the boot connection and use duct tape to set it in place. Attach a new Panduit strip with pliers. Pull the outer layer down and attach a Panduit strip to it. Do the same on the outer layer. Using your paintbrush, paint the connection with mastic sealant.
If you find the duct is ripped in places then first clean it properly because clean seals will last longer than seals with dust in them. Hold the ripped pieces together and apply duct tape. Then seal with mastic sealant.
WAIT AND CHECK:
Before checking if the unit is fixed and is working properly wait for some time. Then switch on and feel around the duct again. If you don’t feel anything around the patched up areas then the leakage issue is solved. If you feel you have missed some place then repeat from step one.
IN CASE OF HVAC DUCT WORK:
Leaks in HVAC ducts allow air from your furnace or air conditioner to escape, wasting energy and raising the heat and cooling costs.
To seal holes or tears in an HVAC ductwork:
- Locate Leaks: Turn on the HVAC fan and feel along the ducts for drafts indicating escape air.
- Seal Leaks: Turn off the fan and apply special metallic foil tape made for repairing ducts over the hole or gap. Don’t use standard duct tape, since the adhesive will come loose over time. Then apply mastic sealant.
